The Mathematics of the Mind by Nuri Muhammad

The Mathematics of the Mind by Nuri Muhammad explores how the thoughts we entertain ultimately shape the lives we experience. Although the title uses the language of mathematics, the book isn’t really about numbers. It’s about mental equations—what we add to our minds, what we need to subtract, what we repeatedly multiply through attention, and the outcomes those calculations eventually produce. Muhammad’s basic argument is that if we want different results in our lives, we must examine the thinking that created our current results.

Throughout the book, Muhammad presents the mind as both powerful and sacred, but also vulnerable to outside influence. Every thought, suggestion, image, and opinion competing for our attention should not automatically be accepted as truth. We must place a guard over the mind and consciously decide which ideas deserve to take root. A negative belief about ourselves may appear insignificant at first, but when it is repeatedly reinforced, it can affect our confidence, habits, relationships, finances, health, and sense of purpose.

One of the book’s most memorable ideas comes through a quote from the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan: “The more sincere the motive, the more sustained the action.” That statement explains why motivation alone often fades. When our actions are based on appearances, pressure, or temporary emotion, they become difficult to maintain. But when the motive is sincere—when it is connected to purpose, conviction, and a genuine desire to transform—the action has a much stronger foundation. In mathematical terms, the internal cause determines the durability of the external result.

Ultimately, The Mathematics of the Mind teaches that changing your life requires more than simply thinking positively. It requires thinking deliberately. We must trace our actions back to their originating thoughts, examine the motives behind them, and calculate where they are likely to lead. Muhammad’s message is that we are not powerless spectators in our own development. By guarding the mind, correcting our internal equations, and aligning sincere motives with disciplined action, we can become active participants in shaping our destiny.

I Am by Howard Falco

Howard Falco’s I AM explores the power hidden in the words “I Am” and argues that they act as declarations that shape the way people see themselves and ultimately experience life. Falco suggests that whatever follows those two words becomes an internal script: I am capable, I am defeated, I am successful, I am growing. These statements become more than thoughts — they become identities that influence decisions, emotions, and actions. Reading this book revealed an interesting parallel to the early #IAmGUIILA movement because it was never simply a hashtag or brand phrase; it functioned as a personal creed designed to reinforce identity and movement.

Within the G.U.I.L.L.A. philosophy (Gifted. Unique. Individual. Livin’ Life Accomplishin’), the emphasis was never on a fixed definition of success. Instead, it centered on the idea that each person possesses unique value and should pursue goals according to their own path and purpose. The “Accomplishin’” aspect was intentionally flexible because accomplishments evolve over time and vary from person to person. In many ways, this mirrors Falco’s message that identity is not about becoming someone else, but consciously choosing who you already are and how you will show up in the world.

As the journey evolved, the philosophy expanded through the D.O.P.E. framework (Dreams. Opportunities. Purpose. Education), which can be viewed as the four pillars supporting the G.U.I.L.L.A. foundation. If G.U.I.L.L.A. answers who I am, then D.O.P.E. answers how I build. Dreams define vision, Opportunities create pathways, Purpose gives meaning, and Education becomes the mechanism for growth. Together they form a progression: Identity → Direction → Execution → Impact.

Viewed through that lens, I AM becomes more than a book about affirmations or positive thinking. It becomes a reminder that identity is foundational. The ultimate takeaway is not simply to repeat words, but to live them: GUILLA is who I am. DOPE is how I build. Impact is why I do it. Because a creed is not a destination — it is a standard for how you show up every day.

Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude by Napoleon Hill and W. Clement Stone

Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude is a self-help and personal development classic that builds on the foundational ideas of Napoleon Hill’s earlier work, Think and Grow Rich. Co-authored with W. Clement Stone, a successful businessman and believer in the power of mindset, the book centers on one core principle: a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) which is the key to unlocking success, happiness, and fulfillment in any area of life.

The authors argue that every person has a “talent or gift” that can be used to achieve success, but only if they maintain the right mental attitude. PMA is described as a way of thinking that focuses on solutions rather than problems, sees opportunity in adversity, and believes in the power of persistence, faith, and action. The opposite—Negative Mental Attitude (NMA)—leads to defeat, stagnation, and unhappiness.

The book outlines 17 success principles, including:

• Definiteness of purpose: Knowing exactly what you want.

• Applied faith: Believing in your ability and your goals, and taking action based on that belief.

• Going the extra mile: Always doing more than you’re paid for to create added value.

• Self-discipline: Mastering your emotions, habits, and desires.

• Personal initiative: Taking proactive steps rather than waiting for things to happen.

Throughout the book, Hill and Stone share inspirational stories of people who overcame incredible odds by applying these principles. From underprivileged individuals to entrepreneurs and inventors, the examples reinforce the idea that success is not limited by background or resources, but by mindset and effort.

A key takeaway is the idea that “every adversity carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.” This encourages readers to reframe challenges as opportunities for growth and transformation.

Ultimately, Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude is both a philosophy and a call to action. It challenges readers to take control of their thoughts, believe in their potential, and build a life of purpose, abundance, and resilience through the power of a positive attitude.

Motivating Black Males to Achieve in School and in Life by Baruti K. Kafele

Motivating Black Males to Achieve in School and in Life by Baruti K. Kafele is a powerful guide for educators aiming to improve outcomes for Black male students. Drawing from decades of experience as a teacher and principal, Kafele addresses the cultural, social, and psychological factors that impact the academic performance and self-perception of Black males. He argues that their challenges are not just academic but also tied to identity and societal influences, and that educators must approach their work with intention, empathy, and cultural understanding.

The book emphasizes the importance of self-reflection for educators, urging them to examine their own biases and teaching practices. Kafele outlines practical strategies for creating empowering learning environments, including mentorship programs, culturally relevant instruction, and strong student-teacher relationships. He highlights the need for schools to not only educate but also affirm the worth and potential of Black male students, helping them navigate societal pressures and see themselves as capable, valuable, and destined for success.

In this easy to read guide, Kafele offers both a challenge and a blueprint—asking educators to rethink how they engage with Black males, while providing tools to support their academic and personal growth. His message is clear: when Black males are inspired, affirmed, and understood, they can and will achieve greatness both in school and in life.

As A Man Thinketh by James Allen

As A Man Thinketh

In this short read, the author outlines different ways in which our thoughts create our realities, leading to either happiness and joy or pain and sorrow. The way in which one thinks is the base of all actions. We think several thoughts a day and may not act on them, but the actions we take always start from an initial thought.

Some may believe that their actions are automatic and are the results of habit. While this may be true, those habits stem from an initial thought. For instance, a basketball player may shoot free throws so much that it seems automatic. However, the thought of being a good free throw shooter led to the act of practicing those shots until it became a habit.

As I stated before, this is a short, but interesting read that you may find invaluable
